Henrietta and Samuel Barnett opened the doors of Toynbee Hall on 24th December 1884.

Their radical vision was to create a centre for social reform and research where students of Oxford and Cambridge could come to live and work as volunteers in London’s East End.

They would experience first hand the effects of poverty and would learn how to develop the practical solutions that would actively improve the lives of those living in the slums of Whitechapel.
